華盛頓砍倒櫻桃樹的故事，是一個大家耳熟能詳的「誠實典範」，但加拿大多倫多大學（Toronto University）的一項最新研究指出，兒童越早開始撒謊（white lies），而且說得具有說服力，長大以後較可能功成名就。
據英國「每日電訊報」（Telegraph）網站報導，研究人員發現2歲的小孩能撒小謊，表示腦部發展快速，意味他們較可能成功，而說的謊話越可信，長大後越機智，獨立思考能力也越好。
負責這項計畫的兒童研究所所長 李康 博士（Kang Lee）表示，「如果小孩瞎扯，父母不應該擔心。」因為這也代表他們已發展出「執行功能」，因為說謊牽涉多種大腦訊息處理，藉由把真相藏在心裡，捏造出具 說服力謊話的能力。
李康博士還表示，幾乎所有小孩都說謊，認知發展較好的小孩比較擅於說謊，而且長大後當上執行長的機會比較高，而且童年的「善意謊言」與長大後容易 考試作弊或變成騙子的機率無關。
加拿大研究團隊總共測試1200名2至16歲不等的兒童，結果顯示20%的2歲兒童會騙人，3歲前增加至50%，而將近9成4歲小孩會說謊，最愛 撒謊的年紀是12歲，但只有認知能力較佳的才能編出最高明的謊話。
